In 1952 Amdahl joined IBM and became chief designer of the IBM 704 computer, which was released in 1954. Amdahl later became the principal architect for the phenomenally successful System/360, which was introduced in 1964. Amdahl proposed a more powerful computer to IBM's top executives who rejected his proposal. Amdahl decided to quit IBM and founded his own company. Amdahl Corp. launched its first product, the Amdahl 470/6, in 1975, competing directly against IBM's System, followed by 470V/6 with Dynamic Address Translation (DAT).
