Das CDP dient der Forschung und Weiterentwicklung von digitalen, intelligenten bzw. „smarten" Produktentstehungsprozessen, welche heutzutage als „Industrie 4.0" bezeichnet werden. Das im August 2017 gegründete Comet Center „Center for Digital Production" ist eine der führenden Forschungs- und Entwicklungsplattformen im Bereich Flexible Fertigungsautomatisierung, Machine-to-Machine Communication und Produktions-netzwerken. Zu den wissenschaftlichen Partnern zählen neben den relevanten Instituten der TU-Wien internationale Institutionen wie die ETH-Zürich und das Karlsruhe Institute for Technology. Der Kreis der Unternehmenspartner umfasst mehr als 40 namhafte Anwender und Technologieanbieter in den Forschungsbereichen des Zentrums.
