CMA Microdialysis is a Swedish life science research tools company founded in 1984 as a spin-off from the Karolinska Institute. CMA's complete lines of instruments and consumables are used globally by universities and pharmaceutical companies as unique tools in pre-clinical research. The concept of Microdialysis was born in the early 1970's. While examining the cross-section of a blood vessel among nerve endings and in order to monitor the chemical events in the tissue; Professor Urban Ungerstedt of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm had the idea of using a dialysis tube as "an artificial blood capillary".The first paper on Microdialysis was published in 1974. Since then, more than 13.000 scientific papers have been published on the technique.
