Who are we?In 2006, the Ministero dell'Ambiente, della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare (MATTM) funded a project for the creation of a unit for the necropsy of large cetaceans. In 2009, our team was in charge of the coordination and management of a sperm whale mass stranding along the coast of Gargano (Apulia, Southern Italy). The expertise acquired from that event allowed us to receive additional funding from the MATTM to create the Cetacean's stranding Emergency Response Team (CERT) under the ACCOBAMS 4.16 resolution for the management of emergencies. The duties of the CERT are to intervene in case of anomalous events which require competencies and expertise in terms of logistics, first response, veterinary medicine and biology, such as large cetacean strandings, live animals and mass strandings, coordination of epidemic events and anomalous deaths.Here you can find the CERT's institution website from 2011 (in Italian): https://www.minambiente.it/notizie/operativi-il-mezzo-e-il-laboratorio-mobile-del-cert-cetaceans-strending-emergency-responseSince then, our team has been called in more occasions, acquiring this way remarkable competencies concerning investigation post-mortem of sperm whales, fin whales, ziphiids and pilot whales, working together with Istituti Zooprilattici Sperimentali and other institutions and University departments, including a second sperm whale mass stranding. For the purpose of this work, we always confront with international entities, such as NOAA, ACCOBAMS and IWC, thus sharing our experiences and research.
