Gemma's story:In June 2021, Gemma suffered a life-altering spinal injury at an equestrian event. Gemma's life would never be the same again. Gemma was rushed to James Cook University Hospital and was hurried straight to theatre for major spinal surgery. This was the very start of an unimaginable and difficult journey. While spending months in intensive care Gemma fought with all her strength for her own life. It was a harrowing and extremely worrying time for all who knew and loved Gemma, especially her family. The news that Gemma was tetraplegic as a result of her injury was utterly devastating. Despite this Gemma continued her fight. The first was learning to breathe and swallow again. All while dealing with the mental turmoil and the dark days she was faced with.Gemma is currently in a residential home, her needs are extremely complex. She requires 24hr round the clock care, therapy and specialised equipment. This is vital to enable Gemma to return home.Gemma is now preparing to leave the care home, and to do this she must have specialised equipment and continuing intensive therapy, in order to live a fulfilling life. As a community we would like to come together and raise as much money and support as we can to help her achieve this goal. Which will in turn give Gemma every possible chance to regain any movement and improve her mental health. The ultimate goal would be to fund a 12 week physical therapy placement at a specialist residential rehab centre. This alone would cost in the region of £114,000 (Steps Rehabilitation in Sheffield).Gemma's unwavering positivity, spirit, and sheer determination have shone brightly during the most devastatingly difficult years of her life. Gemma and her family are extremely grateful for the kindness and support they have received.
