Christiania Militære Samfund ble stiftet 1. mars 1825 av en gruppe subalterne offiserer. Stifterne var kaptein Jacob Gerhard Meydell, som også var den først formann, kaptein Jens Christian Blich og premierløytnant Thomas Edvard von Westen Sydow.

I 1925 ble navnet endret fra Christiania Militære Samfund til Oslo Militære Samfund (OMS). Lovens innhold er i ånd som i 1825. Samfundet har i dag ca.1700 medlemmer.
