The split-Hopkinson pressure bar system is composing of the launching section which had a pressure air chamber, gun barrel and a velocity or speed sensor. Next is the bar section consisting of the incident bar, transmitter bar and the momentum bar. Lastly is the momentum trap section. The auxillary equipment consisting of the system controlling unit, the triggering system and the data acquisition system. The three main type of split hopkinson bar system are compressive, tensile and torsion mode. Aside of the independent standalone system type of one mode in each system, Advance Instrument have already developed and market a 2-in-1 system that combine both compressive and tension mode under one system.
