Ngāi Tahu has lodged a statement of claim in the High Court at Christchurch seeking recognition of its rangatiratanga over the freshwater in the Ngāi Tahu takiwā (area). The statement of claim is to address the ongoing degradation of awa (rivers) and moana (lakes) caused by environmental mismanagement. Te Kura Taka Pini (TKTP) oversees the claim process. TKTP also supports applications for customary marine title under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011. TKTP works closely with all Ngāi Tahu Papatipu Rūnanga to support their aspirations in freshwater and coastal marine areas across the takiwā.
