Association loi 1901, MADERA a travaillé en Afghanistan entre 1988 et 2019 et en France à partir de 2020. Ses activités sont axées sur le développement et la réhabilitation rurale et communautaire des économies rurales, visant le développement socio-économique et le soutien des initiatives locales. L'association a effectué une palette d'interventions dans différents secteurs de l'économie rurale sur des centaines d'initiatives locales : développement communautaire intégré, l'intégration des réfugiés, l'accès à l'eau, la production agricole (noix, légumes, céréales, tubercules…) et horticole (fruitier, plante…), l'élevage (santé animale, fourrages, cheptel…), l'artisanat, l'agroforesterie (protection de la forêt, bois, fibre) et la génie civil (infrastructures comme des ponts, des routes…). MADERA a aussi mis en place de nombreux projets pour renforcer les capacités et améliorer l'accès aux moyens de subsistance en favorisant la cohésion sociale et la réintégration de réfugiés. Ces projets incluaient le soutien d'initiatives de petites entreprises, des activités de travail contre rémunération, des formations de renforcement des compétences et l'échange de meilleures pratiques.MADERA est dédiée à soutenir les territoires à prendre en main leur destin en soutenant leurs initiatives et pratiques qui respectent l'environnement, afin de renforcer leur capacité de contrôle sur leur propre développement durable. MADERA répond aux besoins multiformes des communautés et leur permet de faire émerger et entreprendre leurs propres initiatives de développement grâce à l'amélioration des conditions d'existence et de sécurité alimentaire.MADERA a lancé en 2020 sa nouvelle activité pilote en France : le Programme Ali Jan (PAJ). Le PAJ facilite l'intégration des personnes exilées en dehors des grandes villes et métropoles en France, en milieu rural et périurbain. « Ali Jan » est le surnom d'Alain de Bures vétérinaire qui a passé 27 ans à MADERA et qui est décédé en juin 2020.
